Is it Biblical that God speaks? The skeptic’s guide

Written by Eric

Is hearing God’s voice Biblical?

The answer to that question is like asking if the sun shines during the day or if water is wet. It’s pretty self-evident.

But I’ll entertain you for a bit…

I'll put my “skeptical cap” on for a minute. Since I've got that cap on, then I'm not allowed to look at the most obvious verses. So, we're not going to use all the “God said” scriptures from the Bible where God actively spoke with people like Moses, Elijah, Job and others. Those would be waaaay too easy. We’ll work at it a little bit and dig a little deeper.

Still, there are hundreds of scriptures where God promises to speak. Take for example this one in Jeremiah 33:3…

3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

I mean, how much clearer can it get, right?

Well, not so fast, buster. We have our “skeptical caps” on. I know some have got those “caps” on very tight. It’s so ratcheted on, the most basic things are difficult to see. Which means, we can’t just take God at His Word. We can’t believe what He says. That would be too simple and won’t penetrate through these special caps we have on. Remember, we’re investigating this whole subject thoroughly.

Yet, I can’t get away from this…God said…

“You call. I answer.”

You call. I answer. You call. I answer. You call. I answer. You call… I….answer…

Wait just a minute… That seems a lot like how we do it in our lives, right?

When I met La Peruana, I didn’t speak Spanish. She still doesn’t speak English. Yet, we had great communication.

At the time, we couldn’t make phone calls or video calls because we didn’t speak the same language. The occasional times we did, it was a little awkward. Just because we both wanted to speak… but we couldn’t understand each other’s language. So what did we do? We did a lot of texting. (Thank God for Google Translate and WhatsApp.)

I’m sure the amount of texts probably reached into the hundreds of messages daily at times. We were constantly texting each other. One day, before I moved to Peru, I told my mom…

“When I arrive in Peru, my phone usage will drop to just about zero.”

Because every time La Peruana texted me, I answered. And when I texted her… she answered. (Did you see that?)

You call. I answer.

Just as I predicted, when I arrived in Peru, my phone usage plummeted. Because now we didn’t need to send messages. We were together and could talk face to face.

But this principle still functions in my life daily. As I’m typing this right now, I received a notification on my phone that I had a voicemail from my mom. What did I do?

I picked up my phone to check the voicemail immediately. It ended up being an accidental call. But it demonstrates this principle is functioning all the time.

You call. I answer.

It’s the same with my children. When my son calls me in the house, “Daddy, Daddy!” I answer him.

So, why is it so hard to believe our relationship with God functions the same way? Why wouldn’t communication be exactly like that for God? When one of God’s sons calls for Him, is God going to ignore them?

I believe it gives Him great pleasure to speak to you and I.

You call. I answer.

You and I are created in the image of God. But the image of God is not on the exterior as in male and female. But the image of God is spirit beings which speak. This means our ability to speak comes from His ability to speak. We are speaking spirits because He is a speaking spirit.

You call. I answer.

So then the correct question is not, “Is hearing God’s voice Biblical?” Not only is it Biblical, it’s just how life functions. It’s the basis of every communication between two people.

The correct question to ask is…

Do you hear when God is speaking? Do you hear what He’s saying?

Because that’s where it all starts. It’s not that God doesn’t speak. When La Peruana sent me a message, I received it. But it was my choice to read or delete it. See or ignore it.

I chose to see and read her messages. And she did with my messages. Now, she is my wife. In other words, our relationship got better and more intimate because our communication increased.
