Why you don’t hear God speak: Part 1 Tale of two men

Written by Eric

I’ll tell you a little tale…

The tale of two American football players. They both went to the same school. They both played on the same team. They both even enjoyed enormous success in college. So much so that they were both drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft of the same year.

But that’s where the similarities ended.

One went on to receive enormous accolades in the NFL. As of this moment (when I’m writing), he’s entering his 10th NFL season. He’s broken numerous records for his position. He’s a leader on his team. He’s a generous leader in the community.

And he’s still going strong.

The other man lasted two seasons in the NFL. Many had really high hopes for him. He showed lots of promise before the Draft. But when it came time to don the NFL helmet, he couldn’t make it work right. After being bounced from the NFL, he publicly chronicled his problems with drugs, alcohol, and other things.

Even though these men had the same beginning, the end of these two men were vastly different.

The one going strong in his 10th NFL season is Mike Evans. He’s on pace (as of now) to have another huge year receiving and break more records.

The other is Johnny Manziel.

He could have had a successful career in the NFL like Mike Evans. Maybe not at the same level. No one will ever know what could have been.

Recently, Netflix released a documentary with Johnny Manziel. I didn’t see it. But I’m curious if he looks back on his football experience and wishes there were a few things he knew during his playing days. A few tweaks in certain areas, especially understanding, could have helped him be successful in the NFL.

This is kind of like how it is in Christianity.  The truth is, every person can hear God speak. You were created by God to have a relationship and hear Him speak. Communication is a fundamental building block of any relationship.

But then why do some people hear the voice of God and others don’t?

Here is one (of many) reasons…

Ignorance

If you don’t know something exists or is available to you, you won’t access it. If you don’t know Starbucks has a new frappuccino flavor, you’ll never order it. Plain and simple. Ignorance can be a big part of the problem you might have with hearing God’s voice. You’re not sure He does speak. And if He does, then what are the reasons why?

Another branch off the ignorance tree is if you are unaware of how to do something, you won’t do it until understanding comes. I’ve experienced this at times with my life and so have you, I’m sure. Like when my sons were younger, they didn’t know how to tie their shoes. So, they didn’t do it. I had to buy velcro shoes for them or they would constantly be tripping over their untied shoelaces.

Once they learned to tie their shoes, they began to do it every day. It’s very simple for them now. They don’t even think about it. When it’s time to go, they tie the laces quickly.

And this is how it is when someone is ignorant of how to hear God’s voice. It’s not that you don’t want to. It’s just, you’re not sure how. So you don’t hear God as you should. But once you learn some simple things, then it will be part of how you live your everyday life.

That’s why I’m here. To help you and others who really want to hear God speak and follow Him. This is not about some church or some denomination. I’m not trying to replace any pastor, priest or parish. This is about Jesus Christ and being a disciple of Him, no matter what church or denomination you go to.
